Travelling At Night Lore primer
Enough Secret Histories to play Antibes without a thesis
You do not need a Cultist Simulator PhD to play Travelling At Night. You need a compact primer so tooltips feel friendly. This page offers on-ramps, then points you back to play.
The elevator pitch
Alternate twentieth century. Occult forces are real. Hours, Mansus dreams, Worms, and bureaucratic occult institutions haunt prior Weather Factory games. Travelling At Night moves into isometric CRPG form while staying in that cosmos: 1948, post-War-in-the-World, Cold War flavoured by Incorporates versus Ministries, cities changed by chitin, leaf, and amber.
Spencer Hobson
A specific man, not a blank captain. Named across Secret Histories works. Time in the Suppression Bureau and Légion du Seuil; regrettable business in Poland; disappearance after Worms hollowed his memory in a Cracow winter about twelve years before the demo. Carries something that opens ways. Seeks Nenah. Careers rewrite which professional past he emphasises—Exorcist, Writer, Conjurer, or Physician.
Skills you may recognise
Nyctodromy, Bosk, Skolekosophy and friends echo Book of Hours scholarship. Charm and Dignity behave like social weapons. The sixteen-skill web is CRPG-ified, not a card-table transplant. See Skills.
Factions in the pitch
Incorporates (US-leaning, golden) and Ministries (USSR-leaning, star-touched) wage strange Cold War. Remortals of older orders linger. Demo Antibes seeds politics more than it resolves them—Strathcoyne’s Cross-nature wish is a loud hint without being a lecture.
How to learn in-game
Trust nested tooltips. Use Footnotes. Accept confusion as Spencer’s confusion. After a clear, skim Weather Factory blogs and the wiki links page for primary sources.
What not to do
Do not stop playing to read every wiki. Do not assume combat chapters unlock “when lore demands.” Do not treat Nenah as a simple fetch once vocabulary appears—see Find Nenah. Do not require Book of Hours completion; rhymes help, systems differ.
After the primer
Return to How to play, pick a Career, and walk Antibes. Lore sticks better when attached to checks you failed and Footnotes you chose. Demo status and platforms stay practical on Updates.
Vocabulary shortlist
Worms — hollowed Spencer. Hours/Mansus — dream/occult architecture from prior games. Incorporates/Ministries — strange Cold War poles. Remortals — older orders lingering. Signs/Memories — growth fuels. Nenah — personal lead. Learn these in play order, not alphabetical force.
Spoiler manners
When explaining lore to friends, send them into the demo first. Primer pages are seatbelts, not trailers. If you must spoiler, label Career-specific readings clearly so you do not flatten Passions into one wiki voice.
Bridging veterans and newcomers
Veterans: do not homework-dump Hours charts on friends mid-café scene. Newcomers: do not rage-quit because a tooltip named a god you missed. Both groups meet in Footnotes and play. This primer is a peace treaty.
Canon hygiene
Prefer in-game activations and Weather Factory posts over third-hand wikis when conflicts arise. Travelling At Night is allowed to reframe older facts through Spencer’s hollowed lens—confusion can be diegetic.
Playing confused on purpose
Spencer is hollowed; you are allowed to be confused. Tooltips exist so confusion becomes curiosity rather than forum rage. When a name rings a bell from Cultist Simulator, smile and move—Antibes will not grade your wiki homework. When nothing rings, expand a Footnote and invent a working theory. Theories are Passions in disguise. The primer ends when you close it and talk to Andrée. Put the primer away when curiosity turns into delay. The best lore sentence is the next dialogue option you actually click in the rain. Return only when a tooltip names something that still feels hostile after Footnotes tried to help. End primer mode with a physical act: open the demo, talk to one stranger, expand one Footnote. Lore that does not touch a click is only furniture.
