Travelling At Night Skill priority tier list
Feed the verbs that open town, clinic, craft, and survival
With sixteen skills and a word-dense Introduction, Travelling At Night punishes even spreads. This priority list ranks what to feed first in Antibes and Sanitarium Aujourd’hui. It complements the descriptive Skills guide with explicit tiers. Adjust by Career: Physicians overweight Dignity; Writers overweight Sophistication; Exorcists overweight Skolekosophy; Conjurers overweight Nyctodromy/Bosk.
S-Tier priorities (almost every first clear)
Dignity — Institutional doors, physician fantasy, Respectable social space, collectors who prefer proper dress.
Spivvery — Hot meals in a cold world; logistics when charm fails.
Charm — Café, bookstore, and many town checks—budget Trace when you invest hard.
These three cover talk, survival, and being taken seriously. Even Conjurers should not leave Spivvery at zero.
A-Tier priorities (build-defining)
Sophistication — Writer flagship; bookstore and cultural framing.
Skolekosophy — Forbidden study; Exorcist/Curiosity engines.
Nyctodromy — Liminal night logic; future travel investment that still pays in demo weirdness.
Bosk — Green and growing forces; synergies with certain sanitarium and town beats.
Pick one or two A-tier skills that match Career rather than all four.
B-Tier (situational but valuable)
Remaining skills in the sixteen-web fill gaps—specialist occult verbs, niche social frames, and craft enablers. Raise them when a Footnote, craft station, or Nenah lead demands it. Do not let B-tier shiny names empty your Memory budget before S-tier foundations exist.
Anti-priorities and traps
- Spreading evenly across sixteen skills.
- Ignoring Spivvery because your Career sounds noble.
- Maxing Charm while Trace skyrockets.
- Dumping everything into occult verbs before you can speak to Léon, Andrée, or Dr Aubiere.
- Spending all experience on temporary roll boosts until your sheet is hollow.
Priority by starter package
- Clinic Compass: Dignity → Spivvery → Skolekosophy/Nyctodromy.
- Riviera Notebook: Sophistication → Charm → Spivvery.
- Threshold Clerk: Skolekosophy → Dignity → Bosk.

Dread, companions, and outfits
High Dread taxes every skill—priority order cannot save a ignored meter. Vincent aids rolls but is not a skill replacement. Outfits shift Aspects and weather comfort; swap before major checks rather than overspending Memories. Read Dread & Trace and Outfits.
Crafting dependency
If you plan Rite of the Ascending Sun style Dread tools or Midnight Mark experiments, confirm which skills the station expects before dumping all growth into Charm. Craft items and Crafting system should sit beside this tier page while you plan.
How to apply mid-run
Every major Memory windfall, ask: does this buy an S-tier rank, an A-tier fantasy spike, or a B-tier key? If you cannot answer, open the Build Planner and rewrite your top three. After the demo, revisit priorities when night travel and new regions land—Nyctodromy likely climbs.
Worked examples
Example A: Physician hits Dignity early, buys Spivvery after the first hunger beat, then slots Skolekosophy when a Footnote demands forbidden study. Charm waits.
Example B: Writer buys Sophistication and Charm, bleeds Trace, then emergency-buys Spivvery and learns silence.
Example C: Conjurer rushes Nyctodromy, fails a public craft under Trace, then rebuilds Spivvery and Dignity to recover socially.
These arcs matter more than abstract letter tiers. Copy the arc that matches your last failure.
Memory windfall rules
Small windfalls feed S-tier. Medium windfalls may buy an A-tier fantasy spike. Large windfalls should still leave a cushion for craft gates you have not seen. If a windfall coincides with high Dread, prefer stabilisation crafts over vanity ranks—Manage Dread.
Antibes checkpoint priorities
Before you enter the sanitarium deeply, secure Dignity or Charm (as fits Career) plus Spivvery. Before your first experimental craft night, secure the occult skill the station implies. Before Mimata, ensure you did not leave every Memory in temporary roll spends. Checkpoint thinking beats abstract letter grades when the chapter is ending and your sheet still looks confused.
Companion-adjusted ranks
With Vincent, you can leave a borderline skill one notch lower and still attempt a gate—once. Without Vincent, promote that skill earlier. Recruitment timing therefore changes priority curves; players who postpone Vincent should not blindly copy Physician charts that assume aided rolls.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers drawn from the demo and official notes.
Should everyone max Dignity?
Not max—prioritise. Writers may lead with Sophistication/Charm but still want some Dignity.
Is Charm safe to stack?
Powerful but Trace-sensitive. Stack with restraint.
When do B-tier skills matter?
When a craft, Footnote, or lead hard-gates on them—then promote temporarily.
Do temporary spends beat permanent ranks?
Only for critical moments. Permanent S-tier ranks win long conversations.
